Portobello

Edinburgh's seaside, with a promenade and a sandy beach.

Postcodes EH15

The feel

Portobello grew as a Victorian seaside resort and still has a beach-town atmosphere. The promenade runs along a long sandy beach, busy with walkers, swimmers and paddleboarders all year round.

The high street has its own independent shops and cafés, and the Portobello Swim Centre still has its restored Turkish baths, dating from the early 1900s.

The homes

Homes range from tenement flats and terraced houses to Georgian and Victorian villas on the streets leading down to the sea. Properties on or near the promenade are especially sought after.

Getting about

Frequent buses run into the city centre, and there are rail stations nearby at Brunstane and Newcraighall.

Who it suits

Anyone who wants the sea on the doorstep without leaving Edinburgh — families, dog owners and open-water swimmers in particular.
